A white box switch is a network switch that is assembled from standardized commodity parts.

White box switches refers to the ability to use ‘generic,’ off-the-shelf switching (or white box switching) and routing hardware, in the forwarding plane of a software-defined network (SDN).

A white box switch runs on off-the-shelf chips. Although white box switches do not have as many features as proprietary switches, they tend to be less expensive and just as fast, which make them an attractive alternative to brand name switches.

White box switches are really just that – ‘blank’ standard hardware. They represent the foundational element of the commodity networking ecosystem required to enable organizations to pick and choose the elements they need to realize their SDN objectives.

A common operating system for white box switches is Linux-based because of the many open and free Linux tools available that help administrators customize the devices to their needs.

White box Ethernet switches offer IT the advantages of flexibility, lower Capex and potentially lower operating costs as compared to traditional "black box" Ethernet switch options.

White box switches are not expected to have the same complex features and functions of black box switches, because most will function in an SDN environment in which the SDN controller is making forwarding and control-plane decisions from a centralized point for all switches in the network.

White-box switching is often pitched as a way to cut costs, but the greater value lies in its ability to make networks more programmable and automated.
