Artificial intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that emphasizes the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans.

It is a branch of computer science that aims to create intelligent machines. It has become an essential part of the technology industry.

Artificial Intelligence is a way of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently, in the similar manner the intelligent humans think.

Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft are all investing heavily in AI.

AI is a field of computer science that includes machine learning, natural language processing, speech processing, expert systems, robotics, and machine vision.

AI was coined by John McCarthy, an American computer scientist, in 1956 at The Dartmouth Conference where the discipline was born.

According to the father of Artificial Intelligence, John McCarthy, it is “The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs”.

The core problems of artificial intelligence include programming computers for certain traits such as:
Knowledge
Reasoning
Problem solving
Perception
Learning
Planning
Ability to manipulate and move objects

There are two broad categories for AI: Decision problems and search/optimization problems.
Examples of decision problems:
Given this state of a chess game, which of the available moves should white make?
There are a lot of different systems that are used to try to make these decisions. For games with turns, like chess, it's usually based around evaluating the state of the game at each move to give a score for each player, exploring all of the possible paths the game could take, and choosing the move that maximizes the score.

Examples of search/optimization problems:
Solve Sudoku puzzle
The Sudoku puzzle is the only one with a definite "right" answer. You write a search algorithm that methodically tries all numbers in all open boxes, forward propagating to see if what you've done is still possible, and backtracking when there's a conflict.

There are generally two forms of AI - narrow and general.
Narrow AI is the ability of software - sometimes in conjunction with hardware sensors and mechanisms - to dynamically perform an otherwise narrowly-defined task that is simple for humans but difficult for autonomous machines. Self-driving cars would be an example of narrow AI.

General AI would be artificial beings, conscious of themselves and able to undertake a wide spectrum of general tasks they decide upon under changing circumstances, in the same sense that humans do.

Narrow AI can be analogized as artificial animals, while general AI can be thought of as artificial people (regardless of what their "bodies" look like).

There are two types of AI. Weak AI and strong AI.
Weak AI means that it behaves in an intelligent manner, can do something we consider associated with intelligent behavior. This has been done (weak AI) and it's becoming more and more impressive.

Strong AI means that the AI is actually intelligent, not just faking it. Has not been done, and the difficulty is that we don't really understand how our brains work at higher level, so we cannot really create something we don't understand.
